Ever wonder what it takes to bring Lara to life outside the TV screen? We chatted briefly with Marc Klinnert of Studio Oxmox about the process of sculpting our most recent life-sized Lara statue.

Specializing in prototyping promotional figures, Studio Oxmox has crafted Croft statues since Tomb Raider II, in addition to tackling 1:1 versions of Spiderman, Agent 47, The Hulk, and dozens of other pop culture staples.

问：制作一个真人比例的雕像需要那些步骤？
Can you describe the general steps in creating a life-sized statue?
Marc：首先，要参考图片，大部分都是用油机粘土手工制作。就像劳拉，我们利用渲染图片，决定用一个拉弓的动作并放置在一个大基座上。像武器和冰镐的小配件会雕刻在主架构的硬质材料上。 然后，当原型制作完成，我们用硅胶模型把一切固定在树脂里。
Marc: We work from reference pictures first, and most of it is sculpted by hand with oil-based clay. For Lara, we were provided with render pictures and decided to use an action pose with the bow and Lara placed on a large base. Gadgets like weapons or the ice axe are sculpted in hard material like MDF for example. Then when the original sculpt is done, we make silicone molds to cast everything in resin.
问：从开始到结束，制作劳拉需要多长时间
How long did it take to create Lara, from the very beginning until the statue was complete?
Marc：大概要两个月。
Marc: I estimate about two months.
问：在制作模型过程中，会用到真人来参考还是只用官方数据？
Do you use any real life models for reference, or do you work only from official assets?
Marc：我们会用材料和真人模特，像gaby，我的妻子（笑）
Marc: We use reference material and real life models, like Gaby, my wife ☺
问：比起过去的古墓丽影雕像制作，比如说传奇，这次劳拉更真实，这会是更大的挑战吗？
This Lara is much more lifelike than the previous Tomb Raider sculptures you’ve worked on, such as the Legend one. Was it more difficult to create?
Marc：每一个雕像制作都有它的特别之处和难点，但这次制作上，面部表情和肢势将会是一个大大的考验。
Marc: Each statue on its own is uniquely difficult to create, but the face and the pose of this one made it the most difficult.
问：有外包的制作部分吗？
Are any of the parts manufactured outside of the Oxmox studio?
Marc：基座上的人造植物是外包制作。
Marc: The artificial plants on the base are not manufactured by Studio Oxmox.
问：你们会给雕像上色吗？如果会，现在进度如何。
Does Oxmox also paint the figures? If so, what is the process?
Marc：会的，我会处理上色。我们首先给地基上色，然后用喷枪微调。最后加上风干的泥、污迹和血迹 ，使它看起来更真实。
Marc: Yes, I handle the painting. We start first with basic colors and then fine tune with an airbrush. Lastly, we add weathering like mud and dirt and blood to make it more real.
问：为什么选择假发而不是雕刻出来？挑选假发的进展怎样了？
Why did you choose a wig for her hair rather than sculpt it? What was the process of securing the wigs?
Marc：我们发现雕刻出来的头发效果不好，特别是在这次成品上。我们需要花更多的时间去上色到每一根发丝。为此，我测试了一顶专业劳拉设计的假发。这一举措会让大家觉得它的假发不用梳理也能自然好看，因为在雕像上的假发必须保持湿润油滑并且不定型！
Marc: We’ve found that it does not look good to sculpt long hair that moves around the head, especially when it comes to serial production. There is not much time left for them to paint everything such as all the single hair strands. So we tested a wig that was specially made for Lara. It is essential that the customer leaves the wig as it is and does not use a comb to make it straight and nice looking, because on that statue the hair has to be wet, oily and not styled!
