One of the concept paintings flashed in front of us was earmarked with the term 'Kofun'. These are megalithic tombs or 'tumuli' in Japan, constructed between early 3rd Century and early 7th Century. It's worth noting that in 1976 the Japanese government restricted access to some key Kofun sites by foreign archeologists. Why that is still isn't clear.

Clay figures called haniwa (think China's terracotta warriors) were placed around these tombs to guard them and we saw a few paintings depicting a monastery with similar sculptures. But as opposed to traditional haniwa, which depict human warriors (note: OPM is not entirely correct - haniwas were made in numerous forms of humans, animals, buildings and various tools and items), the statues we saw had a bit more of a 'demons-with-predator-wrist-blades' vibe to them. Could these dangerous religious sites have a link t why this seemingly inescapable island is a magnet for ship and plane wrecks?

These are obviously the monsters from the leaked concepts:

But OPM saw them in sculpture version, placed around a monastery. Does it mean they will come to life? Amazing! I loved the coming to life statues in TR3 TRM1

Kofuns in their many different shapes and forms:

Lush vegetation covered many Kofuns making them sometimes almost indistinguishable from natural terrain, satellite images reveal their true form:

Size comparison between the Emperor Nintoku's Kofun (the same one pictured above) with the Great Pyramid in Giza and the Mausoleum of the first Qin Emperor of China:

Oldest Kofuns were made of large boulders:
